Maura Healey’s decision to run for governor creates an open race for Attorney General. A new poll finds that former Boston City Councilor Andrea Campbell would be at the top of the pack if she chooses to run. Campbell earns 31% support among likely primary voters in a hypothetical matchup against Quentin Palfrey (2%) and Shannon Liss-Riordan (3%). But a majority of voters (54%) have not chosen a candidate at this early stage.

The poll, which was sponsored by Policy For Progress, included questions about how likely independents voters are to vote in either party’s primary in the fall. “We’re very early in this contest and many voters have yet to learn about the candidates or even settle on a primary to vote in,”  says MPG president Steve Koczela. “Which primary these unenrolled voters choose to vote in could make a difference in some of these races.”

The full poll results will be released at a Zoom event Monday January 31 at 11am hosted by Policy For Progress. The poll also asked voters about other upcoming Democratic primary contests: governor, lieutenant governor, state auditor. It also dug into key policy questions on education, school integration, and housing issues, as well as views on Charlie Baker and what voters are looking for in primary candidates.

About the poll

These results are based on a survey of 504 Massachusetts registered voters, including 310 likely voters in the Democratic primary in September. Interviews were conducted January 18-20, 2022 by live telephone interviews via both landline and cell phone using conventional registration based sampling procedures. Results were weighted to known and estimated population parameters for statewide registered voters on gender, age, race, education, geography, and party registration. The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 4.4 percentage points with a 95 percent level of confidence. The poll was sponsored by Policy For Progress, a project of ERNA.
